Characterisation of the gene cluster for l-rhamnose catabolism in the yeast Scheffersomyces (Pichia) stipitis.
In Scheffersomyces (Pichia) stipitis and related fungal species the genes for L-rhamnose catabolism RHA1, LRA2, LRA3 and LRA4 but not LADH are clustered. We find that located next to the cluster is a transcription factor, TRC1, which is conserved among related species. Our transcriptome analysis shows that all the catabolic genes and all genes of the cluster are up-regulated on L-rhamnose. Amon...
متن کاملMetabolism of L-rhamnose by Escherichia coli. I. L-rhamnose isomerase.
The methyl pentose, L-rhamnose, is known to be fermented by a number of bacteria, but little information is available concerning the metabolic steps involved in this fermentation. An indication of the pathway of rhamnose metabolism was provided by the finding of Kluyver and Schnellen (1937) that propylene glycol was a major product in the fermentation by Bacillus rhamnosifermentans. Since 50 pe...

BACKGROUND Acetic and propionic acids are produced by colonic bacterial fermentation of unabsorbed carbohydrates and are absorbed into the portal circulation. From there, they travel to the liver, where acetate is a lipogenic substrate and propionate can inhibit lipogenesis. The extent to which peripheral blood short-chain fatty acid concentrations reflect differences in colonic fermentation is...
متن کاملBacterial dissimilation of L-fucose and L-rhamnose.
Eagon, R. G. (University of Georgia, Athens). Bacterial dissimilation of l-fucose and l-rhamnose. J. Bacteriol. 82:548-550. 1961.-Of 33 microorganisms screened for the ability to utilize the methylpentoses, l-fucose and l-rhamnose, 18 species utilized one or both methylpentoses. The majority of the bacterial species capable of utilizing these methylpentoses did so by isomerization of the methyl...
متن کاملThe L-rhamnose genetic system in Escherichia coli K-12.
N 1961 JACOB and MONOD reviewed the general state of our knowledge con’ cerning genetic regulatory mechanisms involved in protein synthesis. They cited evidence that the induction of the lactose utilizing enzymes in Escherichia coli was mediated through the inactivation of an internal repressor by the externally given inducer. Such a model of “negative control” implies that there is no other re...
